Brussels International Airport (BRU)

A major European hub, Brussels International Airport (BRU) is perfectly situated for quick flights around Europe and Asia, and handles traffic from all over the globe. Located 6.9 miles (11km) northeast of Brussels in Zaventem, the airport was awarded Best Airport in Europe by the Airports Council International in 2005. While that was a few years ago, the level of service has been maintained, and the airy and spotlessly clean airport is a real pleasure to use. You should, however, keep your belongings close at hand, as pickpockets are becoming more common, especially in the public areas before security. Also note that staff shortages have seen the average luggage collection wait-time increase to over half an hour. As it is such a busy hub, queuing times can be significant - but canny travellers can book flights on airlines that make use of the Fast Lane at security, a measure that will decrease your overall transit-time appreciably. Although the shopping options at Brussels International are phenomenal, you're encouraged not to spend too much money on your way in: prices are much better in the city.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL)

A secondary airport for Belgium's capital city, Brussels Charleroi Airport (CRL) is a small hub mostly served by low-cost carriers providing connections to popular holiday destinations on the Iberian Peninsula and in Eastern Europe. There are limited connections to destinations in France and North Africa as well. While flights to Brussels Charleroi Airport may be a few euros cheaper, complaints of unreliable public parking and transport, limited shopping and dining facilities, and uninterested service chase many passengers to the larger Brussels International Airport in Zaventem. Because Charleroi Airport is situated 29 miles (46km) out of town, you'll want to arrange your transport into Brussels in advance, as taxi rides can get very pricy very quickly. While it doesn't come recommended as a layover airport, Brussels Charleroi is a popular option for budget travellers on their way to a holiday on the sunny Costa del Sol.
