Sousse

Sousse

Situated on the east coast of Tunisia, Sousse, dating back to the Phoenician times, is one of Tunisia’s earliest cities. It was once fought over by the Romans, Europeans and Arabs but is now a vibrant and modern seaside town while managing to maintain its old charm. A colourful history and vibrant culture combine to make Sousse a must visit destination.

The long white sandy beach, Boujaffar, reaches from the centre of Sousse to the resort of Port El Kantaoui some 10km away. Some hotels have their own private sections but the majority is open to the public. The calm waters of the Mediterranean allow for plenty of water sports on the beach including paragliding, jet skiing and water skiing amongst others.

The main section of the beach backs onto an esplanade where you will find cafes and restaurants. The esplanade is popular at night time also as diners peruse menus from the plenty of restaurants on offer or sit down and watch the world go by with a cocktail, or two! Be sure to try the fish restaurants! With shallow clean beaches the resort is very family friendly. With the neighbouring resort of Port El Kantaoui so close by take a trip to the Aqua Palace water park or the Hannibal Park amusement park; both are sure to be big hits with the kids!

One of the first things you’ll notice about Sousse is its ancient medina. It is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to one of the holiest mosques in the Muslim world, an 8th century ribat (fortress) and a medieval medina. Navigating your way along the narrow alleyways, many of them covered with decorative tiles and taking in the sights and smells of the souks (local market) is a fascinating experience. Under the city are the catacombs with almost 15,000 tombs combining to make up a network of approximately 5.5km of underground tunnels. They are open to the public should you want to venture down and look into Sousse’s history. For those of you want to soak up some history but stay above ground take a visit to the Archaeological Museum or the Dar es-Sid museum.

Spreading out from the medina is the new town with the port on one side and long modern streets on the other. You can avail of the many day trips on offer from the port including nearby Port El Kantaoui with it’s smart marina, the new and impressive Yasmine Hammamet or indeed Old Hammamet with it’s 15th century Kasbah, or try your hand at some of the water sports on offer.
