Cheap city breaks in Prague

Prague has come alive and undergone a modern renaissance as one of Europe's most desirable destinations, with its cobblestone streets and spires giving the whole city the feel of an outdoor museum.

Thankfully, Prague's old town (Stare Mesto) was virtually undamaged during both world wars, allowing the old city to show off a cross-section of centuries-old architecture unseen even in Europe's most famous capitals.

Complementing this buffet of well-preserved history, Prague boasts a feisty nightlife which attracts young revellers from all over the continent, and a trendy assortment of new galleries, clubs, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Prague is therefore a great combination of traditional charm and vibrant, trend-setting youth.

Best season to visit Prague

Midsummer is high season for a holiday in Prague, but this has the disadvantage of bringing in thousands of visitors to bask in the sunny weather. The best time to travel to Prague for those not wanting to join the crowds is in spring (April/May) or autumn (September/October) when the crowds have thinned and the weather is still pleasant.

Prague is known as the City of a Thousand Spires, and if you head to the Castle District, otherwise known as Hradèany, to view fortresses such as St Vitus Cathedral and wander round the cobblestone streets of Old Town Square, you'll see why. The Czech Republic actually has one of the highest densities of castles and keeps in the world, and many of these gems are in Prague. You can also shop at the local market and visit the hill of Vyšehrad. Culture vultures will love the Museum of Communism as well as the Jewish Museum, and history buffs will be captivated by the medieval Astronomical Clock.

Visitors to Prague planning on doing a lot of sightseeing will do well to purchase the Prague Card which will allow them free access to more than 50 of the city's top attractions and discounts on exclusive tours; the card also comes with an exclusive 150-page guidebook. The cost of the card varies depending on how many days it is valid for.

Climate

Prague has a typically European continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm (sometimes wet) summers.

Winters (November to February) can get very chilly; January is the coldest month, with daytime temperatures far below zero and strong, cold winds. Snowfall can be heavy.

Prague experiences average temperatures ranging from 25°F (-4°C) during winter, to 73°F (23°C) during summer. The best time to visit is from May to September when days are warm and nights cool.

The European summer (June to September) is the tourist high season, but spring and autumn can also be rewarding times to visit, particularly if you prefer to avoid the tourist crowds.
