The south coast of Kos, between the airport and Andimahia, boasts the most beautiful and secluded beaches on the island. Moreover, the most popular beaches offer the traditional sun bed, snack bar and jet-ski hire. The loneliest beach is probably ‘Camel,’ which is in a jet-ski free zone. ‘Camel’ is also one of the best places on the island for snorkelling. ‘Paradise’ beach, on the north side, is considered to be the best and it stretches several kilometres between Lagada and Chrisi Akti beach. Marmari and Mastichari beach, also on the north, offer great opportunities for surfers.
Nude bathing is only legal on very few beaches in Greece and it is considered offensive to the traditional Greeks. It is also a bad etiquette to swim or sunbathe within the sight of a church, and there are several churches around the Greek coastline. Topless sunbathing may be legal nationwide, but there are several areas which have adopted their own policy and opted out of this liberal approach by posting signs that should not be ignored. The police rarely hand out fines, but you can end up with three days in jail if you ignore the first warning.
