Holidays in Calpe | Cheap Holidays from UK

Calpe is one of the most popular holiday hotspots on Spain’s south-east coast, but it hasn’t always been about beaches and bars. For centuries it depended on fishing and salt production, and the town’s old quarter is still a far cry from the modern seafront. You’ll find Gothic churches and Roman ruins among the streets, plus cafés serving authentic Spanish tapas.

Holidays to Calpe are a blend of old and new, from Roman ruins and historic churches, to a seafront promenade studded with modern bars and restaurants.

One of the main tourist destinations on Spain’s Costa Blanca, Calpe has been home to many ancient civilisations, which means it has a fascinating history and some remnants of its past, such as its Roman Baths that you can see today. Embraced by a wonderful landscape, where vineyards and mountains are a feature, Calpe is probably best known for its good value fish restaurants and lovely sandy beaches.

Calm waters lap up against a shore that continues on for around 11 km, in a spot where somehow or other modern tourism blends with natural beauty, culture and gastronomy. Expect this variety, which includes on one hand some high-rise buildings close to the beach, but on the other hand the wonderful symbolic rock, Penon Ifach, which you’ve most likely seen already in photos.

In the same way you’ll find that very deep-rooted traditions seem to co-exist harmoniously enough with the tourist industry. And even though it is one of the Costa Blanca’s busier spots, it seems to have mainly retained an attitude of warm hospitality.

Calpe is strategically positioned and guarded by a huge rock jutting out of the sea, Calpe is a most attractive resort on Spain's Costa Blanca. The rock, Penon de Ifach (now preserved as a nature reserve), is the largest in the Mediterranean and it protrudes from the sea like an enormous monster and is Calpe's most famous landmark.

The marina area of the resort is full of delightful boats and pleasure craft and you can even hire a boat for an afternoon for a little sea excursion to inspect the rock at closer quarters. A pretty seafront promenade stretches for miles and borders 3 stunning, pristine sand beaches, all typical of lovely Costa Blanca resorts.

Burgeoning from an old fishing village, Calpe has a hugely boisterous fish auction which ensues here each afternoon and there is even a spectator gallery! A thriving market also takes place every Saturday - just the place to pick up souvenirs and trinkets.

The resort has good shops, bars and restaurants and is a lovely family holiday base. Benidorm is easily accessible by local bus if "cooler" nighlife options are in demand, or even the little local resort of Albir offers a change of scene. However, Calpe is a more laid back seaside town where families and couples enjoy some excellent local restaurants where spanking fresh fish and regional cuisine is revered. All in all, a lovely holiday destination and an absolute Costa Blanca holiday resort gem.

Remember, we have a great selection of hotels in various resorts in Costa Blanca and, with direct flights to Alicante from Ireland, the whole area is accessible.

Breathe in the pure sea air, while taking in the beautiful views of the surrounding nature. Discover interesting flora and fauna on some of the routes, like the Sierra de Oltà, Las Salinas Natural Park, Vormar and of course Peñón de Ifach.

If you like a buzzing tourist destination, with good weather, local seafood cuisine, a historic old quarter, along with outdoor activities, fiestas and nightlife – then you’re heading to the right place.

Calpe is right near the tip of Spain’s Costa Blanca, and within easy reach of the region’s busiest resorts. You can get a ferry to Ibiza from Denia, the next town up, and if you head south you’ll reach Benidorm’s neon glow in half-an-hour. Further along the coastline you’ll find Alicante, where the bustling port shares the spotlight with a cosmopolitan city centre.

Having embraced the holiday buzz, Calpe is all kitted-out for the annual surge of visitors. Its marina has a Blue Flag tick, and comes surrounded by seafood restaurants and open-fronted shops. Trace a path around the headland, and the second beach is backed by a similar line-up of eateries and lively bars. There’s a ribbon of high-rise hotels overlooking the beach, too, but they’re all dwarfed by the colossal Penon d’Ifach.
