Dalyan

Dalyan

Dalyan is a traditional fishing village on the southwest corner of Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. It’s in an idyllic setting, surrounded by citrus fields and pine-clad hills and with a river running through it down to the sea.

Dalyan is not just a beauty spot, though – there are fantastic waterfront restaurants overlooking cliffside tombs, lots of upbeat bars and a lively market, too.

Iztuzu Beach – aka Turtle Beach thanks to the famous Loggerhead sea turtles that breed there – is about 30 minutes away by boat. It’s a lovely journey that takes you down the river delta past tall reeds and native terrapins. And when you get there, you’ve got a crescent of fine white sand stretching for over 4 kilometres. That means plenty of room for you and the turtles.

Dalyan’s main street, Maras Caddesi, has the full gamut of bars and nightclubs that stay open ‘til late. There’s lots of choice here, from family-friendly places with games consoles for the kids to the boisterous clubs plucked straight from an Ibiza strip. And there are plenty of chilled-out bars that serve Efes beer in a cosy setting, too.

From Dalyan, one of the most popular daytrips is to the mud baths at Lake Koycegiz, just 4 kilometres away by boat. Everyone covers themselves in warm mud then lets it dry in the sun, a beauty treatment which reputedly can take years off you. You’re then rinsed off courtesy of the Sultanye thermal springs.

Not many towns can say they rose to fame due to controversy over building a luxury hotel where an endangered species of turtles nest, but Dalyan can! The Turkish town went up in arms when a hotel company tried to buy the land where the rare loggerhead sea turtles have laid their eggs for 9.5 million years.

With a little help from Prince Phillip the area became a protected zone and the turtles can now live in peace and holidaymakers can indulge in a luxury hotel further down the beach! Not only is the holiday resort at one with nature, it also has some beautiful beaches, fascinating tombs and is a brilliant alternative to a normal Turkish holiday. Holidays in Dalyan are relaxing, authentic and a little bit different.

After a morning of sightseeing the beaches of Dalyan welcome you with open arms to relax on their golden sands. The immediate beach is great for sunbathing during the day but be aware that it closes from eight each night to give the turtles time to breed. A short journey can take you to award-winning Iztuzu Beach.

This gorgeous sandy seafront is perfect for swimming and has some fascinating underwater species for snorkelers. As quite a small town, holidays in Dalyan won’t be filled with trips to the zoo or the nearest theme park. Those who are itching for a culture fix, need to just look up into the hills. The mountainside in Dalyan is fascinating to look at, Lycian tombs have been perfectly carved into the sheer cliff faces. Dating back to 400 BC the ruins are in quite spectacular condition and are unlike any other ruins you’ll find on the coastline. Boat trips run regularly across to Kaunos, another incredible ancient site. This trading city is found just across the river and walking around the eerie ghost town you can see ruins including a theatre, port and even individual streets.
