Marmaris has grown from a tiny fishing village into one of the biggest tourist resorts in Turkey. Even so, the town centre is still quite small, and in the old quarter behind the marina, you can stroll around amid all the delightful hustle and bustle of bazaars and street life.

Marmaris neighbouring resort, Icmeler, lies just a few miles away. Many people like to walk along the beach, which will also give you an idea of how much is happening in the boat scene, and the wide range of water sports available along the beaches.

While Marmaris offers more buzz and entertainment, Içmeler boasts better beaches. It is also child-friendly, and newly built. Turkey’s rich and famous tend to congregate in the marina at Marmaris, which means there are good restaurants and great shopping. During the high season, there are as many as ten thousand boats in the Bay of Marmaris, reckoned to be one of the finest bays in the world. There are several excellent long-distance footpaths in the mountains, and many opportunities for excursions amid the beautiful scenery and the little villages along the coast.

It is also possible to get to the beautiful little island of Sedir Adalari. The sand there is unique, and legend has it that it was brought here by Queen Cleopatra 2,000 years ago. Turkish cuisine is regarded as one of the finest in the world, up there with French and Chinese cuisine. The Turks eat a great deal of meat, though not pork, and not all restaurants serve alcohol. Marmaris has restaurants to suit all tastes and wallets.

Sometimes it is hard to tell a café and a bar apart. Places that serve tea and coffee during the daytime transform themselves in the evening and become part of the nightlife. What is really nice is to sit somewhere on the beach promenade, admiring the traditional gulet boats and other sailing boats, while sipping some apple tea or a drink.

The moon shines bright across the pitch black starry sky, the waves of the ocean softly accompanying the wind in a peaceful rhythm. A lonely seagull lets out his cries across the skies, looking for a lost piece of food. As you walk the streets, observing people moving past you like vessels looking for a connection of love, friendship or plain happiness, you realize that this was the place where you can truly leave your stress behind. Visit one of the many bars and clubs where people come to connect, to share their experiences, their emotions, and their dreams. A place where language is not mandatory to truly connect, this is about souls connecting on a deeper level.

First, a brief warning: As Marmaris is such a big tourist destination, you have to keep an eye on prices. Some things can cost four times as much as they do elsewhere, for example, in Datça. Be alert for fake versions of branded goods, and check that you can actually change the batteries in the watch. Otherwise, it will just be an expensive throwaway watch. However, pirate do not necessarily mean worse quality than the originals.

Haggling is essential, above all when buying carpets. When all that is said and done, it can still be a lot of fun just to wander around the bazaar that stretches over several blocks in the town centre. You will find carpets, leather jackets, pirated designer goods and souvenirs are all kinds. At the market (Thursdays in Marmaris and Fridays in Içmeler) you can buy honey and spices (always worth buying in Turkey). Tablecloths are another good buy. But just browsing around all the stalls without shopping is also quite an experience. These days, the market in Marmaris is a covered market (near the dolmus station and the Tansas department store).
