Liverpool

This wonderful city has something for everyone and the people of Liverpool, who have a burning love for it are more than happy to share it with you. From their music - officially the World Capital of Pop to their football (one of the most passionate in the world) to their stunning architecture and maritime heritage. It's no surprise Liverpool was voted one of the top destinations to visit.

Most famous for its two cathedrals, the Albert docks, the Beatles, the Mersey ferries and, of course, its two football teams, the city of Liverpool has a strong and interesting past but is constantly evolving, even more so since winning the prestigious award of European Capital of Culture 2008.

The people of Liverpool, better known as ‘Liverpudlians’ or ‘Scousers’ are some of the friendliest people you'll find around and happily share their city with you.

City population: 466,415

The city’s most famous sons are undoubtedly the Beatles and the city attracts many visitors to follow their journey from their first gig in the Tavern and to their way to international stardom. But Liverpool is more than just the Beatles. The city is also home to two top football clubs, Everton FC and Liverpool FC, the latter being amongst the most celebrated clubs in Europe with 18 League titles and 5 European Cup titles.

Liverpool’s restaurant scene has blossomed over the past decades with new eateries popping up all over town. The city is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe, which, of course, has meant a plethora of brilliant Chinese restaurants in the Chinatown area. There are plenty of local ethnic restaurants with great food available all over the city.

After all the walking in Liverpool, and there will be a lot of walking, here are some lovely cafes where you can rest your feet.

Liverpool offers a varied selection of bars in the city centre. The area around Victoria Street is naturally one of the most popular to visit amongst tourists, mainly because of the Beatles, but also because it offers good bars and clubs.

The nightlife in Liverpool is very lively and it is easy to have a fantastic time. The city’s universities help to ensure a mixed group of people from all over the world.

Shopping in Liverpool is a great experience as most of the shops are located near the main streets in Williamson Square. However, there are a couple of very good side streets which house more unusual boutiques and shops, unique to Liverpool as well. The Liverpudlians are extremely style-conscious and also very big on brand names. It is therefore natural to find most high-end shops having at least one outlet in the city.

The Cavern Walks Shopping Centre in Mathew Square is a great place to find good deals on popular clothing brands. The shopping centre sells kids’ clothes, jewellery, and pretty much everything else. It brings the big names together and the most prominent shop being the Vivienne Westwood boutique. The shopping centres in Clayton Square and St. Johns shopping centre are also worth a visit, and just outside Liverpool is one of Europe’s largest designer outlets, Cheshire Oaks.

The Albert Dock also offers very trendy shops and has everything from clothing to furniture stores. If you need something different, you will need to head for Chinatown. Every Sunday they have a large Chinese market there that sells everything from cooking pots to fresh meat sausages.
